MAGazine
The Spring issue of MAGazine is OUT and for the first time it's FULL COLOUR inside and out! And it looks fabulous!

Many thanks to the MAGazine team for making this happen.  It is all part of our master plan to get MAGazine out on the Newsstands. MAGazine is included in your MAG membership - but you can subscribe to MAGazine or purchase a single issue without being a member of the Guild! Not comfortable with ordering on-line, be sure to come by the MAG office and pick up a copy!

This is the Student exhibition issue - and it has some amazing and innovative work by students from across the country. Many thanks to all of our contributors and the great team that help put it all together.

CALL FOR ENTRY

The Metal Arts Guild of Canada invites you to participate in a juried national exhibition.

"MAG 2067 - Crafting the Future"
MAG celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2007 and we wondered what it would be like to look 60 years into the future. As no one has a crystal ball we decided to give you several possible options of what Canada would be like in 2067. Did you know that in the year 2067 Canada is celebrating its bicentennial? It seems so far away but what changes to our economy, lifestyle and environment would affect our day to day living. How would the Metal Arts Guild have changed, evolved? For the call for entry we have developed five (5) possible timelines of the future in Canada in 2067. We invite you to pick one or two different scenarios and submit a piece or pieces, for each of the possible futures containing a significant amount of metal, but not excluding gemstones, pearls, glass, enamel etc., reflecting the theme and send the work along with an accompanying essay, 150 words or less, to explain your interpretation. The competition is open to all MAG members in good standing, both professional and student members. Each entry will be judged on its craftsmanship, design and responsiveness to the theme. The five possible futures to choose from are:

2067 Greener Future or Global Disaster? - One is imagining how the earth will evolve with global climate change ...read more
Apocalyptic 2067 - There are about 150 of us and we all live underground in old mining shafts ... read more
Metal in Space - Designing for weightlessness one has to comprehend there is no top or bottom, front or back. This is truly sculpture "in the round" ... read more
Regression 2067 - By 2067, the global economy has fallen into isolated communes and fortresses, much like the medieval era ... read more
Scientific and Technological Utopia - What is a futuristic 2067 like? Is it "Buck Rogers", "The Jetsons" or "The Fifth Element"? ... read more

Deadline for entries: Friday, 5:00 PM, Oct 9th, 2009

NUIT BLANCHE
Nuit BlancheWe have recieved several submissions for Nuit Blanche from the USA - but none from Canada yet!

Don't wait for our deadline! Send in your work now! And if you'd like to get involved in the project, please contact Kathryn Dieroff.

We're going to need more volunteers for this one than we've ever required in the past. Because it is such an ongoing, long-term project, any level of support is beneficial to us. If you would like to just come down for an hour and nail up pieces, that's helpful.

2013 SNAG Conference in Toronto

The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) 2013 Conference is officially scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada in May 2013. The conference will be co-hosted by George Brown College and Harbourfront Centre. The conference co-chairs are Paul McClure, professor at George Brown College, and Melanie Egan, Head of Craft Department at Harbourfront Centre. The specific dates in May 2013 and a specific conference theme have yet to be established. It is hoped that a variety of organizations, institutions and individuals will volunteer their participation to make this conference as inclusive, diverse, exciting and original as the Canadian jewellery and metalsmithing community is. Volunteers are needed to organize related exhibitions and events, organize pre-conference workshops, and help with conference planning and implementation. It has been over twenty five years (Toronto, 1985) since the SNAG conference was held outside the United States. In addition to serving the entire SNAG membership, the Toronto 2013 conference will provide a platform for promoting Canadian jewellery and metalsmithing to a local, national and international audience. To express your interest in becoming involved. Please contact Paul McClure at pmcclure@georgebrown.ca or Melanie Egan at rmegan@harbourfrontcentre.com
