2009"
CALL FOR
ENTRY |
| “Craftsmanship names
an enduring, basic human impulse, the desire to do a job well for
its own sake.”1 The work of one’s hand can reveal much about the soul. It takes 10 000 hours of practice to become an expert – at anything. Roughly, 3 hours a day, 20 hours a week, for 10 years of your life. Your brain requires this length of time to assimilate & consolidate and process information. Dedication, perseverance, precision, accuracy, sensitivity, dexterity, agility are all necessary for mastering a craft. The Metal Arts Guild of Canada will be presenting a collection of 10 000 metal objects symbolizing the combined 10 years of dedication it takes to create one craftsman. We would like you to submit your scrap metal objects or anything made of metal. You do not need to be a metalsmith to submit or a member
of the guild. Ideal pieces are your practice plates, maquettes,
and samples. You are not required, nor is it recommended for you to make something new. What we are looking for are the things that helped you in process, which helped you learn. There is no guarantee that you will get your pieces back – the sheer number of pieces in the exhibition will prevent us from being able to accurately track your work. Brass and copper are better than silver – pieces of value are likely to be stolen. Try not to censor what you submit, but please send metal that has been worked on, not just off cuts. Please limit the size of the pieces to less than 3” x 3”. Due to the volume of pieces that we need for the exhibition we would like you to send us as many as you can. Everyone who submits will be credited as a contributing
artist. Deadline for submission is September 18, 2009 For more information please contact Kathryn Dieroff VIEW VIDEO - NUIT BLANCHE 10,000 HOURS |
The Society of North American Goldsmiths (SNAG) 2013 Conference is officially scheduled to take place in Toronto, Canada in May 2013. The conference will be co-hosted by George Brown College and Harbourfront Centre. The conference co-chairs are Paul McClure, professor at George Brown College, and Melanie Egan, Head of Craft Department at Harbourfront Centre. The specific dates in May 2013 and a specific conference theme have yet to be established. It is hoped that a variety of organizations, institutions and individuals will volunteer their participation to make this conference as inclusive, diverse, exciting and original as the Canadian jewellery and metalsmithing community is. Volunteers are needed to organize related exhibitions and events, organize pre-conference workshops, and help with conference planning and implementation. It has been over twenty five years (Toronto, 1985) since the SNAG conference was held outside the United States. In addition to serving the entire SNAG membership, the Toronto 2013 conference will provide a platform for promoting Canadian jewellery and metalsmithing to a local, national and international audience. To express your interest in becoming involved. Please contact Paul McClure at pmcclure@georgebrown.ca or Melanie Egan at rmegan@harbourfrontcentre.com
